We enjoy walking in the Yorkshire dales, having done most of the 2,000ers in the old boundaries that was once North Riding and interested in the Nuttalls - keep adding the lists. Welsh 3,000 also lots of good stuff to do in Scotland - plenty of summits2do MAIN BLOG PICTURES PLEASE CLICK TO ENLARGE ALSO CLICK OLDER BLOGS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE FOR PREVIOUS YEARLY POSTINGS

The Birketts

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Bill Birkett published The Complete Lakeland Fells  in 1994. This comprehensive book identified all the 541 independent fell tops in The Lake District National Park. Later he published a smaller book The Lakeland Fell Almanac, this was seen as the pocket companion to the complete works.
This comprehensive list was the inspiration for us to begin this hill-walking marathon. I picked the book up several years ago and suggested to Jo we should use this just do a few of the walks, but as time went on we began to do more and more, and so the idea of completing all the tops became our goal.
The guide book has shown us some of the most spectacular, untrodden and beautiful parts of the Lake District National Park and given us some great days out.. At times we have argued and sworn about route-finding, but together we have loved it!  A shared passion, tick-list, whatever you wish to call it - but it gets us out there and we are still at it!

THE BIRKETTS 2012

WET SLEDDALE: 26TH March

Wet, wet, wet  - that's Wet Sleddale. Interesting walk on very few tracks. Interesting Shap granite which is pink! Old deer enclosures in the valley - saw two herds on the high fell in Mosedale. Beautiful hot day.

LONGSLEDDALE: 18th March

Longsleddale, Shap Fells. Our first Birketts this year, four in total - short round about 4hrs and just over 7 miles. Going was rough, very boggy, peat gruffs - saying that, magnificent country with great views over The Howgills and over Gatesgarth Pass to Riggindale on High Street.
